TEEC paragraphs are new for many people - especially people in elementary school.
Sometimes new is scary and so TEEC is scary. It doesn't have to be. Force it. If we force students into things with which they may be uncomfortable, they will soon learn to find a comfort zone. Students usually do not take long to realize that a 4-sentence TEEC paragraph is not too difficult.
Sometimes new is overwhelming. It doesn't have to be. Force it. Students often tell me they just can't find a quote for the second E (Example) of TEEC. I simply tell them, "that is the expectation so they better keep trying." With a little bit of guided practice students usually don't take too long to learn how to find effective quotes.
Sometimes TEEC is more writing than the students are used to doing. It doesn't matter. Force it. People are often lazy first and try hard second. If a student can get away with doing the same thing in Grade 6 as they did in Grade 4 or 5 then they will continue to do that. If you ask for TEEC paragraphs in all subject areas and various forms of writing, students will soon get used to writing 4 sentences at a time. Think about that. Four sentences really is not too much, even in Grade 3.
Sometimes... No, most of the time, students will ask, "Does it have to be TEEC?" The answer is, yes, it has to be TEEC. Force it. If you stay the course, eventually students will learn to appreciate TEEC paragraphs and understand how easy they are.
Sometimes you force it.
